Ruben and Lullaby

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

From IndieGames:

From FingerGaming: Ruben & Lullaby is a story you play like a musical instrument. Two lovers are fighting. You can control what they’re feeling, where they’re looking, when they speak, and when they listen. Tilting back and forth triggers the cuts from shot to shot, advancing the story. Your actions conduct a moody jazz soundtrack that reflects the feelings of the characters as they change in real time.

I love the idea, the interface, and the dynamic music changes, though it’s difficult to tell how linear the storyline is.

We Make Money Not Art reviews the Art, Price, Value show in Florence, and discusses the theme:

Contemporary art plays an increasingly prominent role in our culture, with some of its most visible figures reaching a status that can only be compared to the one of fashion designers, Hollywood actors and pop stars. Many people have come to associate contemporary art with tactics made of shock, awe and circus. The economic power of art is reflected in the spectacular prices obtained at international auctions, the increasing number of museums accused of ‘blockbusteritis’, biennials becoming as necessary to the tiniest country as a local airport, festivals popping up everywhere (just how many media art festivals are there in The Netherlands exactly?), star-stud openings and mega-happenings.

I think Bethan Huws’s work above is great. :)

“Brain Hacking”

In a similar vein to the post on inducing perceived body swapping, the Boston Globe has an article about further brain oddities and hallucination’s entitled “Hacking Your Brain”. It details an easy way to induce hallucinations through sensory deprivation, as well as some more examples of messing with our body-consciousness.

The ease with which this can be done is striking, and a bit scary. It incited a Wikisafari* through the dark reaches of Neuro-linguistic programming, amongst other topics.

* I have just coined this word. May it bring me prosperity.

Crayon Physics deluxe demo

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Via IndieGames:

Excellent news! The demo for Crayon Physics Deluxe is now available (for WinXP and Vista) for download. This is the physics sandbox game I discussed earlier.

18 levels are available to play, and while these first levels might be a bit easy, there is lots of scope for finding multiple solutions for them. The look and feel of the game is very nice, even encouraging you to doodle in the level choice screen.

(Mirrored from Play Well Together’s Dev Blog)

I’ve just finished the last few fixes to bring Play Well Together – my collaborative storytelling game – to a stage ready for limited testing. This is the official announcement of Play Well Together – Alpha. Friends, family, and extreme enthusiasts testing first, and we’ll see what comes out of it. Go check it out – but be charitable, and remember that your comments are invaluable!

The idea of the game is that there is a play produced every 12 hours, so people can contribute from anywhere in the world and be able involved in at least one. There is a counter at the top of the page which gives the time left before the end of this creation period. Once the time is up, the current most popular content is rolled up into a movie, and the slate is wiped clean for the next round. Movies can be embedded on your homepage.
